Amsterdam couples massage in the room, or the hotel spa downstairs?

Many hotels where business travellers stay have a spa on a lower floor, with a menu of treatments and a booking desk. It is a reasonable first thought. On a working week, though, the spa and the room answer different questions, and this page sets them side by side.

The hotel spa sells treatments in a shared space, at hours the spa sets, with a therapist the spa assigns. An Amsterdam couples massage from this house is a session in your own room, at the hour you choose, with a therapist you have chosen from her profile. Both have their uses. For a couple whose free time is shaped by somebody else's programme, the difference in hours usually decides it.

The hours

Hotel spas tend to close in the evening, often before the working partner is back from the last session of the day. In a large trade week, their evening slots are taken early by delegates who booked from home. The house answers around the clock, and the session starts whenever the two of you are ready, whether that is eight, ten or after midnight.

The room

A spa treatment room has a table, soft lighting and a shower down the corridor, and you walk back to your room in a robe afterwards, possibly past a colleague waiting for the lift. A session in your own room means nothing to walk back from. The bathroom is your own, the bed is your own, and when she leaves the evening carries on where it is.

Amsterdam couples massage and the spa couples room

Some spas have a couples room with two tables side by side. It is a good format for a classic massage, and if that is what you want, the spa may be the right answer. The sessions on the techniques page are different: given on the bed, with warm oil, at a slower pace, by a therapist who sets out at the start what her session includes and where her limits are. What comes nearer to the spa's couples room is a therapist each, two sessions running side by side.

Choosing the therapist

At the spa, whoever is on shift takes the booking. Here, the two of you read the profiles on the roster and name the woman you would like, or describe the kind of session you want and let the reply suggest someone. On a trip where the evening is scarce, knowing who will knock matters.

Cost and commitment

The spa prices by the treatment and adds it to the room bill. The house prices by the hour, with the figures for one guest or two printed in every profile, and settles them directly with you: half ahead on a first booking and on any evening fixed more than a day ahead, the rest at the door. Nothing appears on the hotel bill, which on a company account may matter.

Questions

Can we use the spa during the day and book a session in the room in the evening?

Of course. The spa is good for a swim or a sauna on the free partner's afternoon, and the evening session is a separate thing. Leave a couple of hours between them so that the evening does not start tired.

Is a session in the room as relaxing as the spa?

For many couples it is more so, because there is no walk back through the hotel afterwards and no next booking waiting for the table. The room is warm, the lights are yours, and nothing has to end when the treatment does.

Does the hotel allow a therapist to visit the room?

Guests receive visitors in hotels every evening. If the front desk is staffed at night or the lifts need a key card, tell reception a visitor is expected or meet her in the lobby.
